St. John’s Episcopal Church- Sodus
The mission is to love and serve our community in the name of Jesus Christ, and that is at the core of all we do and hope to be. Our ministries are evidence of this love and concern for the larger Sodus community. We host two Community Dinners each month, stock a Sundry closet of personal care items for those receiving SNAP assistance and maintain a children’s closet with low or no cost clothing for kids. Twice a year we host the Mexican Consulate and help our rural migrant worker population apply for services and licenses. We’ve recently begun to partner with Sodus High School to help provide supplemental food for children and families. Our women’s group raises money to contribute to other services within the community. The men of the church help with Community Dinners, setting up for events, running the grills, maintaining the building and raising money for special projects. Everyone has a place and a gift to offer the church and the world. We are anything but stagnant.
Though many in our congregation are over 60 years old, we are attracting new members from different age brackets. Our openness to difference and our genuine care for each another is obvious to those who come.
We are committed to our Episcopal heritage and liturgy while also willing to try new forms of worship. Our small choir has an amazingly rich voice that enhances our weekly service. During COVID our former priest resigned and a worship committee formed to offer weekly Morning Prayer when we could not get priest assistance. That group of dedicated leaders has continued to develop their skills even after calling a new part-time priest. “Many hands make light work” is our motto.
